Dear Westfield,
When did you last talk with friends about what it means to live a life with integrity?
Students at Westfield are having these conversations. Our Second-grade students, with Teacher Tamika's help, talked together about what they thought integrity meant. They summarized their thinking into a "Sense of the Meeting Minute" they shared during our regular Wednesday, Meeting for Worship.
"We, the members of the 2nd grade talked about this month’s query on integrity. We concluded the following: integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching. When you have integrity you should think about what you do before you do it. That way, you could show all the good stuff inside of you.
You should always show integrity because you don’t want to receive consequences, you want good karma to come back to you, the little kids are watching you and they copy behaviors, and finally, you need to be a good role model."
We are getting ready to celebrate Pi Day on March 14th (3.14). Students are challenged to memorize as many digits of Pi as possible, to write poems, or to draw pictures depicting Pi. Children are learning about the importance of this number to their everyday lives.
Earlier in the month, our younger students celebrated our one-hundredth day of school with pictures depicting varieties of 100 objects, counting contests, and addition competitions.
Our seventh-grade students have completed their miniature golf course challenge applying their knowledge of geometry to the creation of imaginative holes – everything from an insect-themed hole to a many-layered heart. Math is everywhere and matters every day.
Never underestimate the power of children for thoughtful discussions about what matters.
For our community members observing Ramadan beginning with the new moon on 2/28, “Ramadan Mubarak”. For our community members observing Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent on 3/5, “Have a blessed Lent”.
Warmly,
Margaret Haviland
