The ceramic studio has been busy during the spring term. Art students have been exploring clay with joy and enthusiasm. Each student begins their journey with a pinch pot to study hand building techniques. They move on to create more complicated forms, including seed pods, hollow forms, animals, plates and mugs. Every work is fired in the kiln to 1400 degrees (bisque firing). This first round creates objects strong enough to accept underglaze painting. Finally, the bisque works are over glazed and fired again to 2200 degrees. The clay is vitrified, the glaze turned into glass!
We never know exactly what objects will look like until the kiln is opened. A magical experience for all. These remarkable works are just a few examples from the studio this current year.
